Standards & Credentials Governed by the Work Management Institute (WMI)

The Work Management Institute (WMI) is the founding professional body dedicated exclusively to the advancement, definition, and standardization of Work Management as a distinct professional discipline.

As the originating institute, WMI serves as the governing authority for the core standards, bodies of knowledge, frameworks, and professional credentials that define the field of Work Management within WMI’s scope.

This page outlines the standards and credentials formally governed by WMI.

The Work Management Body of Knowledge™ (WMBOK™) is the foundational reference framework for the discipline of Work Management as defined by the Work Management Institute.
WMI is the authoring, governing, and maintaining body of the Work Management Body of Knowledge™, responsible for its scope, structure, terminology, and ongoing evolution.
Purpose of the WMBOK™
The WMBOK™ establishes:
  • A shared vocabulary for Work Management
  • Core principles and concepts of effective work coordination
  • Foundational frameworks and models
  • The intellectual basis for Work Management education and certification
The WMBOK™ is designed to be tool-agnostic, methodology-neutral, and applicable across industries, roles, and organizational contexts.
Governance
The Work Management Institute:
  • Defines the official scope of the WMBOK™
  • Publishes and revises WMBOK™ editions
  • Maintains alignment between the WMBOK™ and WMI certifications
  • Oversees future expansions, research inputs, and practitioner feedback
All references to the Work Management Body of Knowledge™ originate from and are governed by the Work Management Institute.

Frameworks and Models Maintained by WMI

WMI is the steward of several foundational Work Management frameworks, including but not limited to:

  • C4 Flywheel™ (Clarity, Coordination, Completion, powered by Collaboration)

  • Coordination Stack™

  • Work Value Pyramid™

  • The 7 Principles of Work Management™

These frameworks are formally defined within the WMBOK™ and serve as reference models for education, certification, and applied practice.

Future Standards and Credentials

As the discipline matures, WMI will continue to develop and govern additional standards and professional credentials aligned to the WMBOK™.

Planned credential pathways include:

  • Work Management Professional™ (WMP)

  • Certified Workflow Architect™ (CWA)

All future credentials will be explicitly mapped to the WMBOK™ and governed under WMI’s standards framework.

A Discipline in Its Formative Stage

Work Management is still in its formative stage as a standalone discipline. During this phase, stewardship is essential to ensure clarity without rigidity, structure without exclusion, and progress without premature standardization.

WMI does not claim to be the sole authority on Work Management, nor to permanently govern the discipline. Its role is to act as a neutral, responsible steward—maintaining coherence while the field evolves.

Scope of Authority

The Work Management Institute defines and governs:

  • The Work Management Body of Knowledge™ (WMBOK™)

  • WMI-issued professional certifications

  • WMI frameworks, models, and terminology

  • The formal definition of Work Management within WMI standards

WMI does not claim authority over:

  • Proprietary software tools or platforms

  • Project management, Agile, or other established disciplines

  • Organization-specific methodologies

Instead, WMI provides a foundational, discipline-level framework that complements and integrates with existing approaches to work.

Stewardship and Evolution

Work Management is an evolving discipline. WMI is committed to:

  • Evidence-informed standards development

  • Practitioner-driven feedback

  • Responsible evolution of the WMBOK™ and credentials

  • Long-term stewardship of the profession

The current period represents the Foundational Era of Work Management, during which core definitions, standards, and credentials are being formally established.
